Although it may not have the international name recognition of Google or Facebook, Tencent is an industry titan. The company, headquartered in Shenzhen, China and publicly traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange for a decade, was valuedat just over US$150 billion last year. It was also the fifth-largest Internet company in the world and the largest not based in America, just above its competitor Alibaba, which made a much heralded IPO on the NASDAQ last September. It dominates China’s PC online and mobile games markets through a vast, profuse array of business units and companies in which it invests. Tencent provides a vast array of web services such as social networking and e-commerce, and also multiplayer online games (MMOs).
