Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej Passes Away

The world’s longest reigning monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX of the Chakri dynasty, passed away this week at the age of 88. There will be at least 15 official days of mourning before succession can take place and then Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn will ascend to the throne. Currently a 96-year-old former army chief and prime minister, Prem Tinsulanonda, is serving as the country’s regent. Since 1932, when the absolute monarchy was abolished, Thailand has had 25 general elections and 19 coups, 12 of them having been successful. King Bhumibol served as a symbol of unity during these many power struggles and it remains to be seen how the country will be impacted by this tremendous loss.
