As the largest games market in Greater Southeast Asia, Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) is a market in its own right and very distinct from mainland China in terms of gamer behavior, local game development, and types of games in demand. The market continues to grow across both PC online and mobile games, and esports is heating up with significant investment entering the space. With a clearer regulatory landscape than mainland China, the Taiwan market represents a lucrative opportunity for international competitors but it requires a different approach and understanding.

China’s National Day leads to tourism boom

More than 705 million Chinese citizens travelled around the country during the National Day holiday according to the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA). The CNTA noted that this was an 11.9% increases vs the prior year. Total spend during the holiday grey to $87.7 billion, up 13.9% year on year. China’s domestic tourism industry earned about 3.9 trillion yuan in 2016, and the country plans to raise tourism revenue to 7 trillion yuan by 2020.

Tencent and NetEase dominate global mobile charts

Some 25 of the top 30 revenue earners on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store last month were mobile games, making up more than 80 percent of the total, according to data from Sensor Tower. NetEase’s Fantasy Westward Journey came seventh among the top 30. Developer Tencent had 10 mobile apps among the top 30 in September, more than any other firm.

Garena to bring Arena of Valor to rest of Southeast Asia

After launching the game in Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. Garena will finally bring Tencent’s hit MOBA game to Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. Garena is the official publisher of the game in Greater Southeast Asia.

Shanda renews agreement for Legend of Mir 2

Shanda Games has signed a new agreement with Actoz games to distribute the Legend of Mir games in China for the next 8 years. The Legend of Mir 2 is a sprite-based isometric 3-D massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Korean-based WeMade Entertainment. The game was popular on PC but the new mobile version is where most players are today.
